The Motives Records, Mark Mitchell’s first album as Clue to Kalo since 2009’s Lily Perdida, is his first to be recorded outside a bedroom. Co-produced by Cornel Wilczek (Qua), the album reflects what's been learnt from a relocation in 2010 from Adelaide to Melbourne to work full-time as a producer in Wilczek’s Electric Dreams studio. Inspired directly by several years of weekly DJ performances, the record is bold and varied, while still retaining the trademark turns of Mitchell’s story-driven songwriting. Tales of revolutionaries, cultists, werewolves and cartographers are told through layered vocals and complex and shifting textures, suggesting influences ranging from Randy Newman and The Beatles, to techno, soukous, and blues.
